Nigeria and UK Collaborate to Strengthen Counter-Terrorism Efforts

Abuja: The National Counter Terrorism Centre, Office of the National Security Adviser (NCTC-ONSA), has announced efforts to bolster Nigeria’s counter-terrorism capabilities through a partnership with the British High Commission.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the National Coordinator of NCTC-ONSA, Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, revealed these initiatives during the opening of the Silver, Gold, Intelligence Analysis, and Train the Trainer Aviation Security Courses in Abuja. Laka emphasized that these courses are part of the centre’s transition into a Regional Centre of Excellence for Counter Terrorism in West Africa and the Sahel, aiming to conduct capacity-building programs across the region.

Laka highlighted the strategic cooperation with the British High Commission in building resilient security institutions and promoting regional stability. He expressed the importance of continued support from partners and the dedication of participants from various agencies in achieving the shared goal of a safer Nigeria and region.

The courses, including the Silver and Gold Commanders training, are designed to equip commanders with the necessary skills to respond effectively to incidents, playing a crucial role in preparing for the upcoming Exercise Rapid Response. The Gold Incident Commanders Course targets strategic command level personnel, while the Silver Incident Course focuses on operational command level participants.

The Train the Trainer Aviation Security Course aims to equip trainers with the knowledge to deliver effective security culture training, develop training materials tailored to Nigeria’s needs, and enhance the country’s aviation security. Additionally, the Intelligence Analysis Course provides essential skills for identifying individuals, conducting analysis, and recognizing patterns to enhance national security and support strategic decision-making.

Lt.-Col. Ian Tyler, representing the British High Commission, noted that the UK has brought in military instructors and former police officers to deliver strategic command and operational level training. He encouraged participants to leverage the expertise of these trainers in increasing Nigeria’s operational capabilities to address the threat of terrorism.
