Post: Nigeria Faces Critical Shortfall of 480,000 Data Protection Officers

Abuja: The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has announced a substantial gap of 480,000 Data Protection Officers (DPOs), highlighting a pressing need despite notable progress in recent years.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the National Commissioner of NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, made this revelation during the commencement of a week-long training for the second cohort of the DPOs Training and Certification Programme in Abuja. The number of certified DPOs in Nigeria has risen from under 1,000 three years ago to over 10,000, with more than 27,000 professionals now active in the broader privacy ecosystem. However, the gap persists due to the growing number of data controllers and processors in the country.

Dr. Olatunji emphasized that over 500,000 data controllers and processors are identified, necessitating the services of data protection officers. Currently, Nigeria has approximately 10,000 certified DPOs in this field, leaving a significant gap that underscores the need for ongoing capacity building initiatives. The NDPC is intensifying efforts to bridge this gap through continuous training programmes, aiming to position Nigeria as a hub for highly skilled and globally competitive data protection professionals in Africa.

The certification offered by the NDPC meets global standards, allowing practitioners to operate not just locally but internationally. This initiative also aims to contribute to job creation within the digital economy, aligning with the Federal Government’s priorities.

Dr. Tolu Fadipe, Head of Research and Development, stressed the critical importance of data protection in the digital economy, noting that responsible data handling is fundamental to the growth of digital systems and emerging technologies. The training is designed to build competence and ensure organisations comply with the Nigeria Data Protection Act.

Ms. Adeola Sopade, Head Trainer and Privacy/Cybersecurity Consultant, explained that the training provides foundational knowledge and practical skills for certified DPOs. Participants will be exposed to global best practices, including data protection principles, data subject rights, and compliance requirements, equipping them to handle data access requests and understand legal bases for data collection.

Participant Isang Abasiofong described the training as a valuable opportunity for Nigerian youths to prepare for a technology-driven future. The programme aims to equip participants with the necessary skills to navigate emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and strengthen Nigeria’s readiness for the digital age.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that trainees will be attached to different organisations for internships and potential employment opportunities after completing the programme.
