The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas PI-CNG program has commenced the distribution of free CNG conversion Kits in Lagos State Center, Oyo, Ogun, Kaduna, and Federal Capital Territory FCT, respectively.
The Program Director, Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi, made the disclosure when he briefed Journalists on the effort of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to convert over one million vehicles to CNG for free, to ameliorate the cost of petrol in the country.
While inspecting one of the centers with journalists, the ABG conversion center, at Dawaki in FCT, the conversion kits had already arrived at the center. Oluwagbemi called on the commercial registered motorists to visit any of the centers for conversion.
‘We have about one hundred and thirty conversion centers in the country, and we have signed a partnership with 75 conversion centers to enable us to do more by establishing additional centers across the 36 states of the country, including the Federal Capital Territory FCT.
‘All the commercia
l motorists who converted their vehicles to CNG now are expected to charge passengers less transportation fare compared to those using petrol and to achieve that we engage National Union of Road Transport Workers NURTW, Tax Payers Association of Nigeria TPAN and other stakeholders to achieve compliance and ensure that Nigerians enjoy the transportation palliative.’
While answering questions from Journalists, Mr. Masud Yau, the conversion Engineer at ABG, said people had commenced the conversion but with the free ones from the government, it would increase the number of converted vehicles.
‘We test the car first to ensure that it is good for conversion, then once that is done, we continue with the process, and we have converted many vehicles in our two centers in Abuja and one in Nasarawa State.’
Similarly, Mr. Jibril Muhammed, who converted his vehicle earlier, narrated his experience, saying that Compressed Natural Gas is very affordable at the rate of 320 Naira per kg and called on the government to incr
ease more selling centers to avert traveling for a distance before buying.
The Presidential CNG Initiative was approved by President Bola Tinubu’s administration to provide cheaper and cleaner fueling alternatives for Nigerians after the petrol subsidy removal on the 29th of May 2023.
Presently, Nigerian government has distributed more than twenty thousand conversion kits to five States and the process has continued to establish more centers in Kano, Enugu, and Bauchi among other states in the nation.
