Post: Nigerian Railway Corporation Reaffirms Commitment to Transparency

Lagos: The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr Kayode Opeifa, has restated the commitment of the management to building a culture of integrity, transparency, and accountability within the corporation’s workplace. Dr Opeifa made this declaration at the inauguration of the newly reconstituted Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of the Nigerian Railway Corporation.

According to Voice of Nigeria, as the corporation’s operational footprint expands, so does the need for strong ethical standards and internal controls. Dr Opeifa emphasized that the Nigerian Railway Corporation is undergoing a new phase of growth, modernization, and increased public engagement. He expressed his enthusiasm for the inauguration of the reconstituted agency, which is expected to serve as the corporation’s watchdog, maintaining high standards in service delivery, procurement processes, financial management, staff conduct, and general corporate governance.

Dr Opeifa highlighted that ACTU, established by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), is not merely a statutory requirement but also a strategic instrument for preventing corruption, promoting transparency, and strengthening public confidence across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). He urged the newly inaugurated ACTU members to promote ethical values and transparency, drive compliance with rules and regulations, ensure timely reporting of violations, and work closely with the ICPC.

In his address, the ICPC Chairman, Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, stated that ACTU functions as an internal mechanism to identify and address systemic weaknesses while ensuring compliance with ethical standards across MDAs. Represented by the Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner, Mr Chukwurah Alexander, and further represented by the Head of Lagos State Operations, Dr Mrs Florence Barry, Dr Aliyu congratulated the newly appointed ACTU members and urged them to carry out their duties with diligence and integrity.

Mrs Clara Ndibe, the ACTU NRC Chairman, assured in her acceptance speech that the unit will enhance public confidence and contribute to a more transparent NRC. She indicated that ACTU will focus on promoting ethical conduct and strengthening internal processes that support the NRC’s mission. The National President of the Nigerian Union of Railway Workers, Comrade Innocent Ajiji, and the Senior Staff Workers Union leader, Comrade Marcel Okeke, pledged their commitment to more accountable and transparent railway operations.
