Abuja: The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has highlighted the continued strength and evolution of Nigeria’s democracy, emphasizing ongoing efforts to enhance inclusiveness, justice, and accountability within governance. He conveyed these sentiments through the Senate Chief Whip, Senator Tahir Monguno, during the House of Representatives Committee on Constitutional Review’s consultation with political party leaders in Abuja.
According to Voice of Nigeria, the Senate President stressed the importance of ensuring that the nation’s Constitution adapts with the times, commending the House Committee on Constitution Review for its patriotic efforts. He described the engagement with political parties as a historic event, showcasing that Nigeria’s democracy is vibrant and continually evolving.
Senator Akpabio outlined key issues for the constitutional review, including justice, security, inclusion, accountability, judicial and electoral reforms, local government autonomy, special seats for women, state policing, and human rights. He emphasized the significance of elections and justice as fundamental components of democracy, calling for strengthened electoral bodies and independent courts to restore public trust in institutions.
Highlighting grassroots federalism, the Senate President advocated for empowering local governments and enhancing women’s participation in politics. He cited examples from Rwanda and Finland, where women have significant roles in governance, underscoring the benefits of inclusive democracy.
On security, he advocated for localized policing, as seen in the United States, India, and Brazil, stressing coordination between local and national forces. He warned against sacrificing freedom for security, maintaining that the state’s protection should not infringe on citizens’ rights.
Senator Akpabio reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to collaborating with the Executive and other stakeholders, emphasizing the need for laws and reforms that foster progress.
