Abuja:The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has issued a warning to fuel stations that are found under-dispensing petroleum products to consumers, threatening to revoke their licenses.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the NMDPRA released this directive in an industry circular posted on its X handle. This action comes in response to reported incidents of fuel stations under-dispensing products amid rising petrol prices.
The regulatory body described the practice as a serious breach of consumer trust and has instructed petroleum retail outlet operators nationwide to immediately calibrate and verify their dispensers and totalisers. This measure aims to ensure accurate measurement and protect consumers from receiving less product than they have paid for.
The NMDPRA has intensified inspections and enforcement activities across the country. Fuel outlets found to be under-dispensing, operating with improperly calibrated equipment, or otherwise compromising dispensing accuracy will be required to take immediate corrective action. Persistent or serious violations could lead to sanctions, including the revocation of the outlet’s license, in line with NMDPRA’s regulations.
The authority has also urged associations such as the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN), Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN), and Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), as well as the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), to inform their members about the directive and support full compliance across the industry.
NMDPRA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumers, promoting transparency, and upholding the integrity of petroleum product transactions nationwide.
