Abuja:The Vice Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, Prof. Uduma Uduma, has called on African governments to address social, political, and economic factors driving youth migration to continents such as Europe, America, and Asia.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Prof. Uduma warned that the unchecked migration of skilled youths could threaten the development of the continent. Speaking at an academic workshop in Abuja, he pointed out that the “Japa” phenomenon, a Yoruba term for escaping, reflects young Nigerians’ frustrations and aspirations beyond economic opportunities, including concerns about security and career advancement.
Prof. Uduma emphasized that migration, while a fundamental human phenomenon that has historically shaped civilizations, also poses challenges for African countries losing their skilled professionals. He acknowledged the contributions of African diaspora communities and urged governments to adopt the philosophy of “Ubuntu” in immigration policies to protect migrants’ dignity.
He also highlighted the role of Open and Distance Learning institutions like NOUN in expanding access to education and facilitating cross-border knowledge exchange. The workshop’s Director, Prof. Moses Shaibu, announced plans to introduce postgraduate programs in Migration Studies by 2026/2027, marking a milestone for the Centre of Excellence in Migration and Global Studies.
The event saw stakeholders discussing migration, development, and human security, with a focus on research and policy engagement. Participants emphasized the need for collaboration among academia, government, and civil society to develop effective migration policies.
