Minna: The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has called on employers in Niger to enhance the welfare of corps members by providing accommodation and stipends to support federal efforts. The appeal was made by Mrs. Tosin Ikupolati, Acting Director of NYSC North Central Area Office, during a workshop for corps employers held on Thursday.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the workshop, themed ‘Administration of Contemporary Corps Members (Gen Z) for Achieving Organisational Objectives’, highlighted the state’s shortcomings in offering essential welfare provisions like accommodation and stipends to corps members, which are crucial for their performance. Ikupolati, represented by Mr. Tony Nzoka, Deputy Director in the North Central Area Office, emphasized the importance of strengthening the relationship between NYSC and corps employers to enhance the scheme’s effectiveness.
Ikupolati pointed out that corps members are part of a global community influenced by the internet and social media, urging employers to adopt strategies that align with this dynamic. She also recommended that employers use artificial and emotional intelligence, empathy, sincerity, maturity, and tactics in engaging with contemporary corps members.
Mrs. Martina Shuaibu-Ibrahim, the NYSC Coordinator in Niger, praised Gov. Umaru Bago for his ongoing support of the scheme. She noted that the workshop served as a platform for stakeholders to engage and strategize for the continued achievement of NYSC’s goals. ‘This gathering is to also appreciate and evaluate the contribution of stakeholders and corps employers for increased collaboration for more effective output,’ she remarked.
Alhaji Abubakar Usman, Secretary to the State Government and Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board, emphasized the potential of the scheme as a tool for youth empowerment, national unity, and community development. Represented by Dr. Idris Legbo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Special Duties, he stated, ‘As administrators and employers, your role is pivotal in shaping the experience of corps members, guiding their actions, and aligning their efforts with our state’s developmental goals.’
The event also featured the presentation of awards to outstanding corps employers in Niger.
