Freetown: President Dr. Julius Maada Bio conducted an oath-taking ceremony for the newly appointed Solicitor-General, Mr. Osman I. Kanu, Esq., at State House, Freetown, Thursday, 25 June 2026. Secretary to President Mr. Baba Fortune cited Constitution Section 65(2), empowering the presidential appointment of a Solicitor-General. His Excellency appointed Mr. Kanu, whose oath-taking fulfills the constitutional requirement for duty commencement.
According to Sierra Leone News Agency, Mr. Kanu expressed profound gratitude for the Presidential confidence, describing the appointment as an honor and sacred responsibility. He noted that the occasion coincided with the Day of Arafah, taking his oath on the Day of Ashura, which serves as powerful reminders of faith, service, and accountability. “Faith guided my professional journey and will continue guiding my service to Sierra Leone’s people. This appointment represents a solemn call to service, not a reward,” he stated.

he rule of law, strengthen democratic governance, and ensure accessible justice for all citizens, especially the vulnerable. Drawing on twenty-two years of legal experience, Mr. Kanu assured full dedication to strengthening the institution and enhancing the Attorney General’s Office effectiveness.
President Bio congratulated the appointee, encouraging steadfast commitment to the principles of rule of law and justice. The President noted that the office carries significant responsibilities, expressing confidence in Mr. Kanu’s effective leadership and contribution to strengthening Sierra Leone’s legal institutions. “I wish you well assuming this important responsibility. Mr. Osman I. Kanu brings over two decades of distinguished service within the Law Officers’ Department, having served as State Counsel, Senior State Counsel
, Head of the Civil Division, and Director of Public Prosecutions, appointed by President Bio in 2023, serving until his Solicitor-General appointment in June 2026.
This appointment marks a significant step in strengthening Sierra Leone’s justice sector and reinforcing the Government’s commitment to the rule of law, accountability, and effective public service delivery.
