Abuja: The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has announced the Federal Government’s initiative to establish 41 University Innovation Pods (UniPods) across tertiary institutions, aiming to transform research and innovation into jobs, investment, and economic opportunities.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Alausa made this announcement through a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Mr. Ikharo Attah. He emphasized that the initiative forms a part of President Bola Tinubu’s vision to transition Nigeria from a resource-based to a knowledge-based economy through education, technology, research, and innovation.
The UniPods are designed to advance research in Nigerian universities beyond academic purposes, focusing on developing marketable products, services, and solutions. Alausa revealed that eight UniPods have already been commissioned or are ready for commissioning, with three operational at the University of Lagos, Nasarawa State University, and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
The minister highlighted the establishment of specialized centers like the Blue Economy UniPod in Akwa Ibom, AgroTech UniPod at Benue State University, Resilience Tech UniPod in Borno, GovTech UniPod at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and Industrial Tech UniPod in Plateau. He noted that the initiative’s success would be measured by the solutions, businesses, jobs, and economic value generated from these centers.
Citing the MineTech UniPod at Nasarawa State University, Alausa pointed out that researchers there have developed geospatial maps showcasing deposits of lithium, gold, and bauxite, highlighting the potential for major economic opportunities if investors are connected with researchers to commercialize their discoveries.
The Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Tech4Dev, is working towards establishing approximately 41 UniPods in the coming years. Alausa stressed the importance of making these centers financially sustainable enterprises rather than dependent on grants.
He explained that the UniPods would operate under a governance framework developed by the ministry and UNDP, allowing eligible centers to establish commercial accounts in line with government guidelines. Revenue generated by the centers could be partially retained for sustainability, with the remainder supporting technological development in their host universities.
Alausa reassured that the ministry would continue collaborating with UNDP, Tech4Dev, universities, and partners to ensure the UniPods become sustainable centers of innovation, enterprise, and economic opportunity. The goal is to translate government investments in education and technology into practical research, viable businesses, jobs, and highly skilled young Nigerians, driving the transition to a knowledge-based economy.
The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, highlighted the role of UniPods in accelerating Nigeria’s industrialization, urging universities to expose students and researchers to industrialization and commercialization. She advocated for transforming innovative ideas into products, services, and businesses contributing to national development.
Ahmad also mentioned that students and researchers from universities other than those hosting the UniPods should be allowed access to the facilities, following appropriate procedures.
UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Elsie Attafuah, praised Alausa for positioning education as a driver of jobs, competitiveness, and innovation. She emphasized the need for countries to generate their wealth and competitiveness in the changing global development landscape. Attafuah described the UniPods as tools for advancing Nigeria’s reform agenda, creating jobs, and helping citizens realize their potential. UNDP is prepared to facilitate South-South cooperation, including possible engagement with India, while strengthening the network among the UniPods and supporting their governance, financing, and sustainability.
