REA and Galaxy Backbone Collaborate to Electrify and Digitize Nigerian Universities

Abuja: The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and Galaxy Backbone (GBB) are joining forces to enhance Nigerian universities with electricity and internet access. Both organizations formalized this collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Abuja, aiming to foster initiatives that drive economic growth, financial inclusion, and the digital economy.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, REA Managing Director Alhaji Abba Aliyu emphasized the significant role of electricity in boosting socio-economic activities. He noted that the absence of reliable electricity costs Nigeria $25 billion annually, a situation the current administration aims to rectify. Aliyu revealed that REA has started deploying hybrid mini-grids in several universities, ensuring these institutions receive dependable and sustainable power.

Aliyu stated that the initiative is a stepping stone for the development of small, medium, and micro enterprises nationwide. The provision of electricity and internet access is expected to improve the efficiency of public institutions by reducing costs and meeting digital requirements. He underscored the vital connection between electricity, financial inclusion, and the digital economy.

The National Powers Public Sector Solarisation Initiative, which has already secured initial funding, plans to expand to several federal institutions in Abuja and eventually to all federal universities, providing them with uninterrupted electricity and internet. Aliyu highlighted the transformative potential of this access, envisioning significant advancements in innovation, research, and the quality of life for students and academic staff.

GBB Managing Director Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju acknowledged the necessity of reliable energy systems for digital transformation. He praised REA’s expertise in extending energy access to remote communities, making it an ideal partner. The collaboration aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s digitalization agenda and serves as a model for effective inter-agency cooperation.

The partnership aims to empower universities and local government areas with sustainable energy and internet solutions. Adeyanju noted that digital transformation requires robust energy systems, particularly in underserved regions. REA’s efforts in deploying renewable energy across the country are both commendable and transformational, he added, indicating plans to equip university hostels with solar solutions and fiber connectivity.

The collaboration between REA and GBB is set to focus on enhancing local government administration, promoting innovation, and advancing research in universities across Nigeria.
