Abuja: Amb. Andrey Pudelyshev, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Nigeria, has reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Nigeria across key economic sectors. This announcement was made during the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, celebrated in Abuja.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Pudelyshev emphasized the untapped potential in trade between Russia and Nigeria, noting that their current trade turnover has not yet reached $1 billion. He highlighted the need to expand practical cooperation in energy, agriculture, transport, extractive industries, the digital economy, and advanced technologies. The ambassador described the anniversary as a testament to the enduring trust and historical partnership between the two countries, recalling Russia’s support during Nigeria’s internal challenges concerning territorial integrity.

Pudelyshev underscored the importance of reviving the Intergovernmental Joint Commission on Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation to bolster bilateral relations further. He pointed out the significance of enhancing ties among regions, universities, business communities, parliaments, and political institutions, with a mutual interest in military and military-technical cooperation.

The ambassador also highlighted Russia’s support for Nigeria’s efforts to combat terrorism, expressing readiness to provide necessary assistance. He noted the momentum gained in cooperation through Nigeria’s participation in BRICS, announcing the upcoming BRICS Plus International Conference in Moscow, where Nigeria is expected to play a significant role in addressing terrorism and ensuring regional stability.

Additionally, Pudelyshev acknowledged Nigeria’s balanced stance within the United Nations, the African Union, and ECOWAS, advocating for a reformed United Nations Security Council that amplifies Africa’s voice, especially Nigeria’s, in global governance.

Amb. Dunoma Ahmed, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, echoed Pudelyshev’s sentiments, noting the enduring relationship built on sovereignty, non-interference, and respect for international law. Ahmed praised Russia’s early support in various spheres, including human capital development through scholarships and training programs, acknowledging the matured and diversified bilateral relations over the past 65 years.
