Lagos:Spotify has brought Nigerian artists Tems and Runtown closer to their fans through its Surround Sound live performance series in Lagos. This event allowed fans to experience the artists’ music in a unique, intimate setting.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Surround Sound series is a live performance format launched from Sub-Saharan Africa to connect artists and fans in close settings while capturing these performances as full-length music films. Selected Spotify premium listeners were invited based on their listening habits to attend the two-night event at Livespot, without any public ticket sales.
Rifumo Mdaka, Spotify’s Format and Video Strategy Lead, noted that the event was designed to create a close artist-fan experience, ensuring the venue was suitable for both performances and film capture. Tems performed songs from her debut EP ‘For Broken Ears’, along with hits like ‘Mr Rebel’ and ‘Try Me’. She invited the audience to sing along, enhancing the interactive experience.
An attendee, @tmdmrv, expressed on X that Tems’ performance of ‘Burning’ was particularly memorable, leaving a lasting impression. On the second night, Runtown opened with popular tracks and performed ‘Mad Over You’ twice, creating a highlight of the event. Another attendee, @wysdavidd, described Runtown’s encore of ‘Mad Over You’ as a significant moment.
Runtown shared that it was his first performance with his band in a decade, expressing excitement about reconnecting with his fans. Spotify announced that the performances were filmed and would be released as ‘Surround Sound presents Tems’ and ‘Surround Sound presents Runtown,’ with release dates to be announced.
