Abuja: Stakeholders canvassing for implementation of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) have advocated the use of technology to enhance access to information in government’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs). They made the call at the Access to Information Conference (AIC), organised by the Public and Private Department Centre (PPDC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the conference, themed ‘Technology and FOI Compliance in Nigeria’, aimed to address barriers hindering the proactiveness of FOIA in the country. The Chief Executive Officer of PPDC, Mrs. Lucy Abagi, emphasized that FOIA is a tool empowering Nigerians to hold the government accountable, fostering transparency, and strengthening democratic institutions. She highlighted the significance of digital transformation in advancing FOIA compliance through digital record-keeping and open data platforms.
Similarly, Mrs. Beatrice Jedy-Agba, the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, represented by Mrs. Gladys Odegbaro, noted technology’s potential to enhance FOIA compliance by automating requests and improving public engagement. However, she acknowledged challenges such as digital divide and cyber security concerns, urging public institutions to prioritize resources and collaboration for better FOIA adherence.
Mr. Garuba Godwin, Head of the Freedom of Information Unit in the ministry, remarked on the growing compliance among public institutions, stating that citizens increasingly demand transparency, often resorting to legal action when access is denied. This trend underscores the necessity for public sectors to align with FOIA mandates, leveraging technology to foster an open and accountable governance framework.
