Abuja:The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has emphasized that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to consolidating reforms, enhancing stability, and delivering economic growth to improve the lives of Nigerians. This statement was made during a news conference in Abuja ahead of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Akume highlighted the anniversary as an opportunity for reflection on Nigeria’s journey, acknowledging challenges and renewing commitment to national unity and development. He noted Nigeria’s history of struggles and achievements, asserting that the country continues to endure and holds great promise.
The Federal Government aims to strengthen institutions, provide infrastructure, and create a conducive economic environment through the Renewed Hope National Development Plan 2026-2030. The plan focuses on productivity, diversification, human capital development, and resilience. Akume stated that the goal is
to transform economic reforms into tangible opportunities and improve living standards.
The Tinubu administration’s structural reforms initiated in 2023 include significant measures such as the removal of the petrol subsidy and foreign exchange unification. These reforms are intended to restore fiscal balance and create a foundation for investment and long-term growth. Akume stressed the importance of mobilizing additional revenue and improving public finances to support development.
Infrastructure development remains a priority, with investments directed towards roads, railways, airports, and digital connectivity. The government is also focusing on increasing electricity generation and expanding distribution networks. In agriculture, efforts are being made to boost productivity through improved resources and infrastructure, addressing food security amid demographic growth.
The government is expanding access to education and healthcare, aiming to improve quality and outcomes. Social protection programs are
being expanded to support vulnerable groups, ensuring no one is left behind during economic adjustments. National security is also a key focus, with intensified operations against criminality and enhanced coordination among security agencies.
The private sector is seen as a critical partner in national development, with the government creating a supportive policy environment. Akume called for the support of democratic values, active citizenship, and a free press to ensure accountability. Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Sen. Abubakar Bagudu, noted that reforms have restored economic confidence and attracted private investment, with ongoing efforts to broaden economic participation and grassroots development.
