Abuja: President Bola Tinubu has made a strong appeal to stakeholders to advocate for and enhance the representation of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to ensure their inclusion and promote their rights and welfare. Tinubu’s call was made during a National Dialogue held in Abuja to commemorate the 2024 International Day for Persons with Disabilities.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Tinubu was represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Mr. Abba Isah, who highlighted the significance of advancing the cause of PWDs in Nigeria. Tinubu referenced the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights as a framework for protecting the rights of PWDs. He emphasized that while the charter does not explicitly mention Article 18, Sub 4, it underscores the importance of safeguarding the rights of all individuals, including those with disabilities.
In line with the Renewed Hope Agenda, Tinubu has appointed a Special Assistant to promote equal opportunities for PWDs. This offic
e is tasked with collaborating with government agencies, subnational governments, development partners, civil society organizations, and associations of PWDs to ensure their policies are aligned with the agenda. Tinubu affirmed ongoing efforts with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities to foster disability inclusion nationwide.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio also pledged continued legislative support from the tenth Senate to promote the rights and wellbeing of PWDs. Represented by Senator Ireti Kingibe, Akpabio emphasized the importance of collective efforts in promoting the inclusive development of PWDs. He urged stakeholders to amplify the voices of PWDs and provide support, stressing the need to evaluate individuals based on their abilities rather than disabilities. Akpabio called for unity and a shared spirit of inclusivity, hope, and determination to advance the rights of PWDs.
The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Mr. Ayuba Gufwan,
noted that the 2024 International Day for Persons with Disabilities is an opportunity to review progress and identify challenges in advancing disability inclusion.
