Uganda’s foreign minister stated it had reached a ‘temporary arrangement’ with the US to accept deported foreign migrants ‘who may not be granted asylum in the United States but are reluctant to or may have concerns about returning to their countries of origin.’
According to Voice of Nigeria, the deal is subject to certain conditions, such as not accepting individuals with criminal records and unaccompanied minors. Uganda also prefers that individuals from African countries shall be the ones transferred to Uganda.
Ugandan journalist and international relations researcher Raymond Mujuni commented on the situation, stating, ‘It’s a deal that helps relieve the US of its burden . but bears little for Uganda.’ He pointed out that Uganda already has one of the world’s highest refugee populations, and this agreement could exacerbate the pressure on the nation’s scarce resources.
