Gwagwalada: Residents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have expressed concerns over the unhygienic state of the Anagada Livestock Market. The residents, in interviews, noted the facility’s poor maintenance and emphasized the urgent need for upgrades to meet public health standards. They highlighted the slaughterhouse as unsuitable for processing meat for human consumption.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, a correspondent visiting the market observed animals being slaughtered on a dirty floor, surrounded by waste. Reports also noted butchers using tyres to process animal skin, producing smoke that polluted the air, and the use of unhygienic water sources to wash slaughtered animals.
Mrs. Deborah Adiche, a trader, voiced worries about the market’s sanitary conditions potentially exposing consumers to diseases. She criticized the handling of meat, which was often placed on dirty floors mixed with animal waste. Adiche urged for stricter hygiene practices, regular sensitization of butchers, provision o
f meat transportation vans, and the construction of a standard slaughterhouse with a reliable water supply.
Mr. Nasiru Ibrahim, a resident, stressed the importance of processing meat in clean environments to protect public health, while Mrs. Bridget Adeniji called for comprehensive rehabilitation of the facility, including improvements in water supply, waste disposal, and modern slaughter equipment.
Public health expert Dr. Emmanuel Ademola warned that poor sanitation in slaughterhouses increases the risk of contamination and disease spread. He recommended regular veterinary inspections and strict compliance with health regulations.
An official from the market, speaking anonymously, mentioned ongoing efforts to sensitize butchers and conduct veterinary examinations. However, compliance remains a challenge, with some workers not adhering to hygiene standards despite awareness campaigns. The official highlighted existing water supply infrastructure but noted the inefficiency of a gas-powered roasting system.
An appeal was made to governments and individuals to provide a modern roasting system for abattoirs across the FCT.
