Abuja: The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has directed the FCT Department of Development Control to demolish all structures built on water channels and right-of-way zones across the territory. This directive comes in response to recent flooding in parts of the nation’s capital, which Wike attributed to illegal developments obstructing natural drainage channels.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Wike issued the order while addressing newsmen after inspecting flood-affected areas in the Maitama District of Abuja. He emphasized that no individual, irrespective of status, would be exempt from this directive, stating, “no big man or senator will be spared.”
Wike highlighted that the flooding was exacerbated by man-made factors, particularly illegal developments blocking drainage channels. He noted, “People have blocked channels where, in the master plan, water is supposed to be channeled.” The minister stressed the urgency of the situation, instructing the Development Control to act swiftly without excuses.
The minister acknowledged potential criticisms regarding the timing of the demolitions, noting that some might perceive it as politically motivated due to upcoming elections. However, he insisted that the demolitions were necessary to rectify past oversights and emphasized that “heaven will not fall” as the right actions are taken.
Wike also addressed broader concerns about the administration’s response to the flooding, asserting that it was not a failure of governance but a global issue compounded by local illegal developments. He pointed out that previous administrations lacked the political will to enforce the Abuja Master Plan, resulting in the current situation.
He refuted claims that the administration had allocated water channels to developers, challenging accusers to provide evidence. Wike dismissed political criticism, focusing instead on the administration’s achievements and ongoing efforts to address infrastructural challenges in the FCT.
Addressing comments from Sen. Ireti Kingibe about administrative oversight, Wike urged her to focus on legislative contributions rather than media engagements, underscoring his commitment to resolving the issues at hand.
