Accra:The international landscape is evolving rapidly, presenting both opportunities and challenges for Africa’s peace and development. African nations are increasingly asserting their independence and striving for unity and self-reliance, yet they continue to grapple with recurring regional conflicts. Addressing these issues requires a collective approach and consensus-building.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Chinese President Xi Jinping recently outlined four principles during a meeting with Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbé. These principles emphasize African leadership, equity and justice, the cessation of hostilities, and addressing both the symptoms and root causes of conflicts. Xi’s approach provides guidance for resolving African hotspot issues and promotes lasting peace and stability on the continent.
The first principle focuses on upholding African leadership, with China recognizing that African nations should play a central role in their regional affairs. China supports the African Union and sub-regional organizations in their efforts to maintain self-reliance and unity. The second principle calls for safeguarding equity and justice by respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity in line with the UN Charter’s principles.
The third principle emphasizes the need to cease hostilities and build peace through dialogue and consultation rather than war or unilateral sanctions. The complexity of security challenges in regions like the Sahel and Lake Chad requires cooperation and consensus among nations, with China supporting the UN and regional efforts to bridge differences through dialogue.
Finally, the fourth principle addresses the necessity of tackling both immediate security concerns and long-term development planning. China aims to share modernization opportunities with African countries and support sustainable development across various sectors, reinforcing the link between development and security.
Nigeria, as a key player in West Africa and ECOWAS, is recognized for its efforts in maintaining regional stability. China appreciates these efforts and is committed to supporting ECOWAS and other organizations in their peacemaking roles. Through collaboration, China and African nations seek to build a future of peace, development, and mutual benefit.
