Lagos: The National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) has initiated the distribution of free fertilisers to 20,160 smallholder farmers throughout the South-West geopolitical zone. This effort is part of the Renewed Hope Farm Input Support Programme (FISP), aiming to enhance agricultural productivity during the 2026 wet farming season.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Executive Secretary of NADF, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, announced that a total of 80,640 bags of fertiliser will be distributed to the beneficiaries. The primary goals of this intervention include boosting agricultural productivity, reducing production costs, and increasing food output. Ibrahim emphasized that the programme is specifically designed to provide targeted support to genuine farmers, thereby strengthening national food security under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The FISP initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s commitment to food security, agricultural transformation, and inclusive economic growth. It is tailored to the comparative agricultural strengths of participating states, with beneficiaries receiving support for priority crops essential to food production and market stability. The fertilisers distributed under the programme are locally produced, traceable, and clearly branded as ‘Not For Sale’. Each bag is linked to verified beneficiaries to ensure transparency, accountability, and prevent diversion.
Sen. Aliyu Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, stated that the programme is part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to reduce production costs, boost agricultural output, and achieve sustainable food security. Alhaji Muhammad Magaji, President of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), added that this intervention will significantly reduce production costs for farmers, improve yields, and enhance productivity.
Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, highlighted that the distribution would boost agricultural productivity and support efforts to position agriculture as a driver of economic growth, job creation, and food security. Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Habibat Adubiaro, the governor praised the Federal Government, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, and NADF for their practical initiatives that directly support farmers and foster collaboration with states.
