Post: ASUSS Seeks Intervention from Governor Sani Over Diverted Union Dues

Abuja:The Academic Staff Union of Secondary School Teachers (ASUSS) in Kaduna State has called on Governor Uba Sani to reinstate the union’s operational status and correct the redirection of its members’ check-off dues.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the appeal was made by ASUSS Chairman, Mr. Mohammed Bala, during the 3rd national workshop organized by ASUSS. The workshop’s theme was ‘The Impact of Ethics and Attitudinal Change in Managerial Leadership,’ held in Abuja as part of the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebrations.

Bala highlighted that deductions from secondary school teachers’ salaries, reportedly up to N2,000 per teacher, have been misdirected to the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) instead of ASUSS for over three years. This diversion has significantly impacted the financial capabilities of the secondary school teachers’ union in Kaduna.

The union seeks the governor’s assistance in ensuring that check-off payments are made directly into ASUSS accounts, allowing secondary school teachers to benefit from their contributions. Bala suggested that the governor might be unaware of this issue, which he attributed to internal manipulations by stakeholders in other labor organizations.

ASUSS, which consists of about 10,000 members in the state, has expressed discontent with the current financial conditions. Despite these challenges, Bala assured the union’s support for the Sani administration’s efforts to advance the state’s education sector.

The union’s leadership is focused on maintaining peace and advocating for change without resorting to actions that could disrupt the educational calendar. Bala emphasized their commitment to aligning with the state’s development goals and avoiding unnecessary conflict.
