Abuja: The National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria, Prof. Chinwe Anunobi, has urged Nigerian children and youths to embrace reading for self-development and national growth. Anunobi made the call in a goodwill message to commemorate the 2026 Children’s Day celebration in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Anunobi described reading as a vital tool for knowledge acquisition, critical thinking, and empowerment, urging young Nigerians to cultivate the habit as a pathway to a brighter future. She emphasized that reading opens doors to knowledge, opportunity, and leadership, and equips individuals with the ideas, skills, and confidence to shape their futures and contribute meaningfully to the country. She encouraged the youth to view Children’s Day as a reminder that every great leader, inventor, and changemaker started with a book.
The national librarian highlighted the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu and the educational initiatives of the Minister
of Education as efforts to expand opportunities for formal and non-formal learning across Nigeria. These policies aim to ensure that every Nigerian child has access to quality education, regardless of their background or location.
Anunobi urged children and youths to take advantage of the facilities and programs offered by the National Library of Nigeria, including book clubs, literacy centers, and digital resources. She encouraged them to read materials about Nigeria’s history, culture, languages, and achievements to foster a better understanding of the nation’s heritage.
The National Library of Nigeria remains committed to promoting a reading culture and lifelong learning across the country. Through its centers and digital platforms, the library aims to bring books, knowledge, and opportunities closer to the public. Anunobi encouraged the youth to visit the library, join a book club, and read widely, especially Nigerian content that reflects their stories.
