Abuja: The Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, has issued a cautionary message to political actors in Nigeria, urging them to avoid actions and rhetoric that could destabilize the country as the 2027 general elections approach.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Sulaiman conveyed this warning during his appearance on the NAN Personality Interview Series in Abuja. He emphasized the importance of issue-based campaigns and fostering an inclusive political culture to safeguard the nation’s democracy. Sulaiman warned against divisive language and behaviors that could threaten national unity or escalate tensions.
“As electioneering activities gather momentum for the 2027 general elections, NILDS is finalizing plans to convoke a political communication summit to address the issues of political communications, including utterances and campaigns,” Sulaiman said. He urged political figures to refrain from making inflammatory statements
and to focus on constructive discourse.
Sulaiman also appealed to political parties and politicians to promote inclusive politics that involve marginalized groups, particularly women and youth. He stressed the importance of maintaining democracy through responsible conduct and warned against actions that could lead to conflict.
Acknowledging the challenges facing Nigeria’s democracy, Sulaiman asserted that despite its imperfections, democracy is preferable to military rule. He encouraged Nigerians to maintain faith in the country’s potential and to manage resources wisely to achieve leadership in Africa.
Sulaiman concluded by expressing optimism for Nigeria’s future and urged citizens to keep hope alive. He emphasized the importance of dialogue, concession, and understanding in addressing the country’s challenges and reiterated his belief in a better Nigeria with divine guidance.
