Manila:Chinese President Xi Jinping has outlined a four-point proposition to advance mining cooperation with Africa, following a meeting with Botswana’s President Duma Gideon Boko during his state visit to China. This initiative is driven by the significant changes in the global critical minerals landscape and Africa’s need for independent development, rooted in the longstanding China-Africa friendship.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria emphasized the strategic significance of these four points, underscoring their potential to transform Africa’s resource wealth into development benefits. The proposition advocates for Africa’s resource sovereignty, ensuring that African countries retain control over their resources and development paths. China supports African nations, including Nigeria, in independently managing their mining sectors, ensuring that decision-making and benefits remain within the continent.
The proposition also stresses mutual benefit and win-win outcomes, rejecting unilateral benefit maximization. In Nigeria, Chinese enterprises contribute to local operations, skills training, and community development, promoting a balance of interests in mining cooperation. The focus on high-quality development encourages local processing and value addition, aligning with Nigeria’s ‘Renewed Hope’ Agenda and China’s development plans. This approach aims to transform Africa’s resources into modernization drivers rather than sources of conflict.
Lastly, the proposal calls for a fair and open cooperation environment, opposing the politicization of African resources. China is committed to working with African partners to maintain stable and favorable conditions for mining investments, ensuring resources serve development purposes. The Chinese government mandates compliance with Nigerian laws by its enterprises, with a zero-tolerance policy on illegal mining, reinforcing the commitment to a transparent business environment.
China is poised to collaborate with Nigeria and other African countries to fully implement President Xi’s proposal, aiming to make China-Africa mining cooperation a model of South-South collaboration and a pillar of Africa’s modernization efforts.
