Post: Chinese Envoy Urges Nigerians to Learn Language for Economic, Cultural Opportunities

Abuja: The Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, Mr. Yang Jianxing, has emphasized the significance of learning the Chinese language for Nigerians, highlighting the potential economic, educational, and cultural opportunities it can offer amidst the strengthening bilateral relations between China and Nigeria. Yang, who also serves as the Director of the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, conveyed these insights during the 2026 International Chinese Language Day celebration in Abuja.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Yang described the Chinese language as a crucial bridge for communication, harmony, and aspirations, recognizing its role as a global tool connecting people and nations. Currently, more than 190 countries and regions offer Chinese language instruction, with over 200 million international learners and users worldwide.

Yang further elaborated that mastering Chinese would allow Nigerians to gain a deeper understanding of China and engage more actively in bilateral cooperation across various sectors. “Learning Chinese is undoubtedly an important shortcut to fully understanding China and realizing one’s dreams through participation in mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Nigeria,” he expressed.

Moreover, Yang highlighted the rich heritage of Chinese civilization, which spans over 5,000 years and is intricately reflected in its language and writing system, preserving the country’s history, philosophy, and wisdom. He noted that 2026 marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Nigeria, as well as the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, expressing hope that more Nigerians will embrace the language, better understand China, and fortify exchanges between the two nations.

In addition to Yang’s remarks, Dr. Mohammed Bulama, the Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), emphasized the power of language as a tool for diplomacy, trade, and cultural understanding. Bulama assured that the corporation is dedicated to promoting intercultural dialogue and international cooperation through broadcasting. He also mentioned the launch of ‘Ni Hao China,’ a weekly radio program introduced in July 2025 in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy, aimed at teaching Mandarin and promoting Chinese culture.

Grace Ike, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, noted the celebration underscored the role of communication in strengthening ties between Nigeria and China. Ike praised the Chinese Embassy for maintaining cordial relations with journalists in the Federal Capital Territory, enhancing balanced reporting, cultural exchange, and mutual understanding between both countries.
