Conakry: Affairs and International Cooperation has released an updated statement regarding the catastrophic Dar-es-Salam landfill landslide in Gbessia, Conakry, providing new details on the impact on Sierra Leonean nationals.
According to Sierra Leone News Agency, following the initial reports issued on August 25th, the Ministry has confirmed through a joint identification exercise with Guinean authorities that the number of confirmed Sierra Leonean deaths has been confirmed to be 17. The identification process, conducted at designated hospital mortuaries in Conakry, has identified 14 men and 3 women among the victims.
While the Government of the Republic of Guinea reports a total of 34 fatalities from the disaster, Sierra Leonean officials note that identification and recovery efforts are ongoing. The Embassy continues to work closely with relevant authorities to verify outstanding cases and account for individuals still reported missing.
In a glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy, the Embassy has confirmed
54 Sierra Leonean survivors from the landslide. This group consists of 32 women, 17 men, and 5 minors.
Immediate humanitarian assistance, including food, clothing, and essential supplies, has been distributed to these survivors. The Ministry stated that further consular and humanitarian needs are currently being assessed in coordination with the relevant authorities.
“The Government of Sierra Leone extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the Sierra Leonean nationals who lost their lives, and to all those affected by this tragic incident,” the press release states, adding that the nation expresses solidarity with the Government and people of Guinea during this difficult time.
The Ministry also expressed its formal appreciation for the cooperation and assistance provided by the Government of the Republic of Guinea throughout the recovery, identification, and humanitarian response efforts.
As the situation remains sensitive and rapidly evolving, the Ministry is urging the public to
treat information about casualties and missing persons with care, relying solely on officially verified information.
