Lagos: Mr Festus Akintoye, the Chief Executive Officer of Pa Philip Akintoye Development Foundation (PAPADEF), has called on governments, institutions, and citizens to promote inclusive development for persons with disabilities through innovation and accessibility. Akintoye made this call in a statement to mark the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), which is observed annually on December 3 to promote the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Akintoye emphasized that the day serves as a reminder to build societies where everyone, regardless of physical or mental condition, can live with dignity, equal opportunity, and full inclusion. He stated that PAPADEF does not view disability as a weakness but rather as a condition influenced by the environment, government policies, and societal attitudes. Akintoye highlighted PAPADEF’s mission to promote equal opportunity, empower vulnerable people, and support inclusive development that leaves no one behind.
Akintoye cited United Nations data indicating that over one billion people globally live with some form of disability. He pointed out that many persons with disabilities still face significant challenges, including limited access to education, healthcare, decent jobs, social protection, political participation, and the ongoing issues of stigma and discrimination. He stressed that disability inclusion is a matter of justice and human rights, urging policymakers and citizens to dismantle barriers faced by persons with disabilities.
On the theme of the 2025 IDPD, ‘Advancing Inclusive Development through Innovation and Accessibility,’ Akintoye remarked that the theme underscores the necessity of leveraging technology, creative ideas, and partnerships to enhance the lives of persons with disabilities. He noted that innovation without inclusion is incomplete and that development without accessibility is unsustainable. He identified key areas for action, including accessible technology and infrastructure, inclusive education, innovation-driven livelihoods, disability-friendly social protection, and robust rights-based laws.
Akintoye reaffirmed PAPADEF’s commitment to disability inclusion, highlighting the foundation’s ongoing efforts in awareness campaigns, distribution of assistive devices, support for inclusive education, and empowerment and skills programs across communities. He mentioned the foundation’s collaboration with government agencies, private organizations, and disability-focused groups to promote equal opportunities.
He urged Nigerians to challenge harmful stereotypes, foster accessible environments, support families and caregivers, promote leadership among persons with disabilities, and advocate for stronger laws and better enforcement. Akintoye concluded by stating that inclusion benefits everyone and strengthens society, making it more productive and compassionate. He lauded persons with disabilities in Nigeria and worldwide for their strength, resilience, and contributions to society, asserting that their voices strengthen democracy and their dreams demonstrate potential outcomes.
