Abuja: The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced that the recent launch of the electronic visa (e-visa) system in Nigeria has processed over 14,000 applications in just six weeks. The announcement was made during a stakeholder sensitisation workshop focusing on key innovations by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the e-visa system, which was inaugurated by the Federal Government on May 1, 2025, has been a significant milestone for Nigeria’s immigration framework. Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized the efficiency of the e-visa process, noting its achievement as a global standard. He assured stakeholders that minor issues being faced would be resolved shortly.
The launch of the e-visa is part of a broader strategy to enhance migration management while fostering economic growth. Dr. Tunji-Ojo highlighted the importance of making visa acquisition straightforward, without compromising national security. He also noted improvements in Nigeria’s border security, thanks to the e-border solution.
The Minister also shed light on upcoming digital innovations, including the electronic Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card (e-CERPAC) and the electronic Temporary Work Permit (TWP), both set to be operational soon. He declared a crackdown on the misuse of the TWP system, ensuring it remains efficient and law-abiding.
In additional remarks, the Minister highlighted the cost savings from discontinuing manual archiving in passport applications, resulting in an estimated annual saving of N1 billion.
Mrs. Kemi Nandap, Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, provided further insights into the digital transformations within the Service. She discussed new services like the e-Visa Application Channel, e-CERPAC, Landing and Exit Cards, and Temporary Work Permit, all aimed at streamlining immigration processes.
Nandap explained that these systems offer seamless online application processes and eliminate the need for physical visits, thereby enhancing convenience for travelers. The digital integration of residence permits and the automation of temporary work permits are also expected to significantly boost efficiency.
