Abuja: The Edo Government has announced the intensification of its efforts to ensure the full and prompt implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through various innovative programs. Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo, the wife of the governor, shared this information during the 2025 SDGs Short Film Challenge and Awards Dinner held in Abuja, an event organized in collaboration with the United Nations and other stakeholders.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the SDG Short Film Challenge aims to inspire creativity and storytelling around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Mrs. Okpebholo emphasized that the government is committed to accelerating the implementation of the SDGs by empowering more than 3,000 rural women through programs focused on clean energy facilities, agricultural production, health, education training, and film production.
Mrs. Okpebholo highlighted the state’s recent project related to SDG 7, Clean Energy, which involved providing clean stoves to rural women. She stressed the importance of starting impactful initiatives from the grassroots level, particularly the education of the girl child and the comprehensive empowerment of women.
The Edo first lady also mentioned the state government’s strategic partnership with a German film academy, aimed at equipping emerging filmmakers with advanced training and access to professional film production equipment. This collaboration is part of the state’s effort to support the film industry, especially projects that promote SDG goals.
As part of her initiatives, Mrs. Okpebholo has been championing empowerment projects through the Better Life and Care Foundation, transforming the lives of numerous women and girls in Edo by providing them with tools and confidence to pursue their dreams.
The Edo Government’s vision aligns with various SDG goals, focusing on creating a future where every community is safe, sustainable, and prosperous. Mrs. Okpebholo also emphasized the collective responsibility of achieving the SDGs, urging filmmakers to use their creativity to drive change.
Olori Ivie Atuwatse III, the Queen Consort of Olu of Warri, also emphasized the role of filmmakers as sustainable change agents, urging governments and international agencies to invest in storytelling to accelerate SDG implementation. She highlighted the power of storytelling in translating global goals into relatable and actionable pathways for ordinary people.
The event concluded with the presentation of awards for excellence in SDGs implementation to Mrs. Okpebholo and Olori Ivie Atuwatse III, along with awards and cash gifts for outstanding short films in various categories.
