Post: FG Aims for 100% Youth and Women Inclusion in Agriculture

Abuja: The Federal Government has set an ambitious target to achieve full inclusion of youth and women in the agricultural sector. This initiative is expected to be instrumental in ensuring food security and driving economic growth. The announcement was made during the handover ceremony of the new executive officers of the Nigerian Women for Agricultural Progressive and Development Initiative (NWAPDI) in Abuja.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Svensson, who has previously served as the National Coordinator, emphasized the pivotal role of agriculture as Africa’s and the world’s next ‘oil well’. She highlighted the empowerment of women and youth in agriculture as crucial for sustainable food production, enhancing food security, and reducing societal issues. Svensson identified women and youth as key contributors to the nation’s food system and expressed her gratitude to the Minister of State for her appointment. She pledged to ensure that the ministry directly reaches grassroots women and youth farmers with available agricultural resources, reflecting the administration’s efforts to bring meaningful change to the sector.

Svensson revealed that the Federal Government has already developed a blueprint for agriculture this year. She assured that her efforts would focus on guaranteeing 100% inclusivity for women and youth in agricultural programs. By introducing innovative ideas in alignment with the administration’s mandates, she aims to promote food security. Svensson acknowledged the support of the Minister of State, an agri-economist, whose expertise makes the task more manageable.

Calling on women to avoid distractions that could hinder progress, Svensson urged them to steer clear of envy and jealousy, which have historically impeded women’s potential across sectors. She promoted teamwork and unity, asserting that these values could inspire young people to see agriculture as a viable and respectable career, rather than resorting to shortcuts to wealth.

Svensson emphasized that the first priority of the administration is food security, with the government making concerted efforts to address this challenge. She commended the current administration for its deliberate strategy to ensure food security and sustainability in line with President Bola Tinubu’s mandates, by actively engaging women and youth in the process.

In her remarks, Mrs. Lucy Pam, Deputy Coordinator, praised Svensson for her dedication to ensuring women and youth receive their rightful resources. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and committed to effective service delivery. Similarly, Mrs. Anyamus Magit, Plateau State Coordinator, noted that 80% of Nigeria’s population is engaged in farming, with women and youth comprising 70% of that demographic. She described Svensson’s appointment as a positive step towards unlocking the potential of women and youth in agriculture for national development.
