Lagos: The Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, Mr. Adedayo Ladega, has disbursed N10 million in bursaries to 200 indigenous students enrolled in tertiary institutions nationwide. This financial support marks a significant milestone in Ladega’s first year in office, aimed at bolstering educational opportunities for young people in the community.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, each beneficiary received N50,000 under the bursary scheme during a ceremony held at the Ikorodu Local Government Secretariat. This initiative forms a part of the educational interventions introduced by Ladega’s administration, which also includes support for General Certificate of Education (GCE) and GEMS programs.
Speaking at the event, Ladega emphasized the importance of this initiative in enhancing students’ future prospects. “Today is about students and their future. We are committed to supporting education through practical intervention that will make a difference in the lives of our people,” he stated, urging beneficiaries to utilize the financial support effectively and remain committed to their studies.
Mr. Oladele Ogunfodunrin, Supervisor for Education at Ikorodu Local Government, revealed that over 2,000 applications were screened to select the final 200 beneficiaries. The rigorous screening process ensured that only genuine Ikorodu indigenes received the bursary. Ogunfodunrin assured that the bursary scheme would be an annual event, with the chairman promising its continuity.
Mr. Abubakar Al-Ameen, Deputy Speaker of the Ikorodu Students’ Association Students Parliamentary Council, lauded the initiative for alleviating financial burdens on students and fostering their academic growth. He encouraged students to actively engage in the electoral process and begin the registration for their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
One of the beneficiaries, Miss Oyefunsi Latifa, expressed gratitude for the financial assistance, highlighting its role in easing the financial pressures of her education. She appreciated the effort in selecting genuine indigenous students and expressed hope for the program’s continuation to benefit more students in the future.
