Abuja: Labour Party has reiterated that it does not currently operate any social media accounts, as stated by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the party’s Interim National Chairman. This clarification was made in response to the emergence of a fraudulent X (formerly Twitter) account, purportedly disseminating official information on behalf of the party.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Asogwa issued a statement highlighting that the account in question, operating under the name ‘LABOUR PARTY (LP) NIG’ with the handle @LabourpartyNGR_, was previously disowned by the party. Despite a prior disclaimer, the operators have deceptively altered the account name and handle to mislead the public. Asogwa emphasized that the Labour Party’s only known social media accounts, which are inactive, are on Facebook (Labour Party-Nig with approximately 12,000 followers) and X (LabourPartyNG with around 837,000 followers).
The party has petitioned the Nigerian Police to recover its official X account, LabourPartyNG, from former party leaders currently controlling it. Asogwa mentioned that the investigation is ongoing, with cooperation from individuals involved, including Barr. Julius Abure and Alhaji Umar Farouk, as they provide relevant information regarding their activities and the unauthorized use of the party’s social media platforms.
Asogwa reaffirmed that Labour Party does not use any social media accounts for public communication, stating that all official information is disseminated through authorized press statements from the Office of the Interim National Chairman. Any changes to this communication structure would be formally announced to the public.
The general public is advised to disregard any information from the fraudulent account @LabourpartyNGR_ and other content circulating via LabourPartyNG. Asogwa specifically mentioned a false post claiming the return of Mr. Peter Obi and Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, which does not reflect the Labour Party’s position. He expressed gratitude for the media’s vigilance, professionalism, and balanced reportage of the party’s activities.
