Lagos:The Lagos Youth Development Institute (LYDI) is actively seeking partnerships and sponsorships from the private sector, development organizations, and other stakeholders to enhance leadership development opportunities for young individuals. This announcement was made by Mr. Ademosu Jamiu, the Director-General of the institute, during the Lagos Youth Leadership Conference.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the conference, themed ‘The Power Equation How Youth and Institutions Shape the Future of Governance,’ emphasized the role of young people and institutions in shaping governance and society. Mr. Jamiu highlighted that LYDI aims to empower youth through knowledge, skills, opportunities, and networks, allowing them to contribute meaningfully to society.
Jamiu noted the increasing demand for leadership development, mentorship, and meaningful participation among young individuals, stressing the need for collaboration beyond the institute’s capacity. He emphasized the importance of partnerships with the private sector, development organizations, and individuals who share LYDI’s vision for youth development.
He also called for ongoing support from the Lagos State Government and relevant sectors to broaden the institute’s reach and enhance the impact of its initiatives. Jamiu mentioned that LYDI has already launched programs to help young people develop crucial skills and networks but acknowledged that more needs to be done to provide leadership development opportunities.
Participants of the conference were encouraged to network, build relationships, and apply their knowledge to benefit their communities and society at large. Jamiu highlighted the importance of investing in young people as an investment in the future of Lagos and Nigeria.
Mrs. Yetunde Asika, Co-Chair of Bandung Africa and an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, also spoke at the event. She stressed that good intentions alone are insufficient for meaningful change, calling for structured systems and regulations to guide operations effectively.
Prof. Seni Afisi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics at Lagos State University, urged political groups to offer opportunities for young people to gain leadership skills and experience. He pointed out that the political consciousness among youths, partly driven by social media, should be harnessed for societal betterment.
The event also included the graduation of participants known as ‘Luminaries’ under the institute’s youth development program.
