Post: May Day 2026: FG Reaffirms Commitment to Workers’ Welfare Amid Challenges

Abuja: The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to workers’ welfare, fair wages, and decent work across the country. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Muhammad Dingyadi, stated this during the 2026 May Day celebration on Friday in Abuja. The event, themed ‘Insecurity, Poverty, Bane of Decent Work,’ highlighted the essential role of Nigerian workers in national growth and sustainable development.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dingyadi emphasized that Nigerian workers are the backbone of national progress. He noted that without labour, there can be no progress, productivity, or sustainable national development. He further acknowledged the resilience, dedication, and sacrifices of workers despite prevailing economic and security challenges. The minister highlighted that the theme of this year’s May Day celebration reflects the realities confronting workers nationwide, including insecurity and economic hardships affecting families, workplaces, and national productivity.

Dingyadi assured that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains focused on addressing issues such as national security, job creation, food security, and youth empowerment. He stated that the recently implemented minimum wage is only the beginning of broader wage reforms, emphasizing that decent work must never be compromised. The government is investing in sectors like agriculture, technology, and infrastructure to expand sustainable employment opportunities.

The minister also outlined ongoing labour reforms, including the review of employment policies, labour laws, and occupational safety frameworks. He stressed the importance of securing workplaces and communities, as productivity cannot thrive under conditions of fear and insecurity. Dingyadi reassured workers that their sacrifices are recognized, their voices heard, and their contributions valued.

In addition, Ms. Inviolata Chinyangarara, Workers Rights Specialist at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Nigeria, described the 2026 May Day theme as crucial for workers’ welfare and social justice. She highlighted the celebration as an opportunity to reflect on workers’ struggles and achievements, as well as the collaboration between the Federal Government and the ILO.

Mr. Adewale Smart-Oyerinde, Director-General of the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), called for stronger collaboration among government, employers, and workers to promote decent work nationwide.
