Lagos: Seven medical graduates from Eko University of Medicine and Health Sciences (EkoUNIMED) in Ijanikin, Lagos, were inducted into the medical profession by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) on Thursday.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, these inductees represent the second batch of medical doctors from the university. During the induction and oath-taking ceremony, Prof. Gbadebo Awosanya, the Vice-Chancellor of EkoUNIMED, urged the new doctors to consistently adhere to the ethics of the medical profession. He highlighted the importance of empathy, integrity, and ability in patient care, which the graduates have been trained to uphold.
Prof. Awosanya remarked that the medical profession demands empathy, knowledge, and skills to improve patient wellbeing and save lives. He expressed confidence that the university has equipped its graduates to succeed and encouraged them to uphold the values they learned during their studies.
Prof. Fatima Kyari, the Registrar of MDCN, administered the oath to the inductees. Represented by Dr. Tijjani Alli, Kyari emphasized the need for competence and continuous professional development. She urged the graduates to embark on the mandatory one-year supervised clinical training, noting the availability of over 100 accredited health institutions in the country.
Kyari advised the inductees to let the values they have learned guide them in their practice, stressing the importance of skills and adherence to professional ethics to avoid disciplinary actions. She also praised EkoUNIMED for its high standards and excellence in nurturing medical professionals.
One of the inductees, Maneenah Abubakar, shared that her journey through medical college was rewarding despite facing challenges. As the pioneer President of the University’s Medical Students Association, she credited her resilience and determination for helping her overcome obstacles. Abubakar encouraged upcoming students to maintain a resilient spirit in their studies to achieve success.
