Post: N80bn Alau Dam Upgrade Progresses, Set to Boost Irrigation and Power Generation

Maiduguri: The Federal Government announced that the N80 billion Alau Dam upgrade in Borno is making progress and is anticipated to enhance irrigation and hydro-electric power generation upon its completion in 2027. This was disclosed by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, during a working visit to the Alau community near Maiduguri.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Prof. Utsev highlighted the significance of the project, noting that the dam was initially constructed to provide drinking water. However, under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, a substantial sum has been allocated for its reconstruction and upgrade. The minister emphasized that Borno State’s reliance on farming necessitated the inclusion of irrigation capabilities in the dam’s upgrade design.

Prof. Utsev detailed the project’s timeline, explaining that the contract is divided into two phases. The first phase, aimed at mitigating flooding, was expected to conclude in September, with the second phase commencing in October and projected to be completed by March 2027. He stressed the importance of the first phase in preventing flooding during the rainy season.

He commended President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babagana Zulum for their dedication to the project, recognizing its importance to both the residents of Borno and the nation. Furthermore, the minister appealed to the Borno government and local community to educate farmers about the need to cease planting crops on the dam’s embankment during its reconstruction.

Prof. Utsev reassured residents that there should be no fear of potential flooding from the dam’s overflow. He was accompanied on his visit by Mr. Richard Pheelangwah, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, along with other senior officials and the Borno Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Tijani Alkali.
