Post: NDLEA Uncovers Sophisticated Meth Lab in Oyo Forest, Apprehends Mexican Expert and Four Nigerians

Abuja: Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have successfully dismantled a sophisticated methamphetamine laboratory deep within the forest of Tapa Village, Ibarapa North Local Government Area, Oyo State. The lab, operated by a Nigerian-Mexican cartel, was discovered and dismantled in a decisive operation that highlights the agency’s commitment to combating transnational drug syndicates.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the NDLEA’s recent operation came just four weeks after a similar meth lab was dismantled in Ijebu East, Ogun State, indicating a concerted effort by drug barons to establish a synthetic drug manufacturing hub in the South-West region. Speaking from Abuja, NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, praised the officers involved for their gallantry and professionalism. Marwa, represented by NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, emphasized the transnational nature of the threat and the agency’s intelligence capabilities.

The raid led to the arres
t of five key members of the cartel, including a 56-year-old Mexican expert in methamphetamine synthesis and four Nigerian collaborators. The discovery of such a sophisticated operation underscores the international reach and ambition of the cartel, as well as the challenges faced by the NDLEA in curbing illicit drug activities.

Following the raid, forensic experts conducted a thorough examination of the facility, uncovering a massive production line stocked with precursor chemicals and industrial equipment. The haul included chemicals such as Phenyl-II-propanone (P2P), Phenylacetic acid, and various acids and industrial catalysts, all crucial for methamphetamine production. The equipment found included reactor pots, distillation units, and dehydrator machines, attesting to the industrial scale of the operation.

Marwa noted that all recovered substances and equipment have been documented and preserved for evidence in court, preventing millions of doses of synthetic drugs from reaching the streets. He reiter
ated the NDLEA’s resolve to combat drug cartels, stating that Nigeria will not serve as a haven for illicit drug activities. The operation is a testament to the agency’s vigilance and determination to dismantle drug infrastructure across urban and remote areas.

The NDLEA’s operation in Oyo State serves as a warning to both domestic and international drug cartels that their activities will not go unchecked. Marwa commended the officers of the Oyo State Command for their dedication and professionalism and expressed gratitude to the public for their trust and information, which aid in securing the nation’s future.
