Abuja:A non-governmental organization, Engraced Ones Prayer Support and Advocacy Initiative, inaugurated two centres in Abuja on Saturday to provide education, therapy, and skills acquisition for children with cerebral palsy and other special needs.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the centres, located in Wuse Zone 3 and Garki Area 1, were opened as part of activities marking World Cerebral Palsy Day, scheduled for October 6, with the theme ‘Unique and United.’
The founder of the NGO, Mrs. Bibora Yinkere, stated that the centres aim to promote inclusion, independence, and an improved quality of life for children living with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. She emphasized the importance of therapy and adaptive learning equipment for effective participation in education.
Yinkere encouraged parents not to hide children with cerebral palsy but instead to enrol them in schools to enable interaction and learning. She highlighted the role of parents as the child’s first teachers and advocates, urging th
em to acquire skills to support their children’s development.
Mrs. Folake David, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, also addressed the event, urging parents to ensure children with cerebral palsy are given opportunities to fully participate in society. Represented by Mrs. Momodu Tessy, an Education Officer, David called for increased awareness and inclusive educational opportunities in schools and communities.
David appealed to stakeholders to replace stigma with practical support, creating opportunities for children with cerebral palsy to engage in education, social activities, and skills development. The inauguration of these centres forms part of advocacy efforts to foster greater acceptance and inclusion for persons with cerebral palsy and other disabilities.
The centres are designed to help beneficiaries build confidence, independence, and employable skills, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to society.
