Abuja: The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) has sensitised its staff on its role in facilitating the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement’s implementation across Nigeria. In his opening remarks, the Director-General of NILDS, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, highlighted the comprehensive approach involving research, capacity building, policy engagement, curriculum development, and the presentation of a compendium on AfCFTA Law, 2019-2025.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Sulaiman emphasized NILDS’ position as Nigeria’s premier legislative and democratic capacity-building institution, tasked with enhancing governance through research, training, policy analysis, and support services for legislators across all government levels. He noted the significant opportunities AfCFTA presents for Nigeria, such as expanding market access, boosting intra-African trade, attracting investment, and promoting innovation, which can reduce poverty and enhance economic growth and integration across the continent.
In expressing his commitment, Sulaiman welcomed participants, including virtual guests, to the programme, which demonstrates NILDS’ dedication to advancing AfCFTA knowledge. He announced the launch of Africa’s first AfCFTA Law and Policy Division alongside a comprehensive compendium of AfCFTA legal instruments and policies. Within weeks, the division established Africa’s first AfCFTA Law and Policy Unit, built strategic regional and international partnerships, and strengthened implementation frameworks.
Prof. Mohammed Ladan, Director of AfCFTA Law and Policy at NILDS, stated that the sensitisation aimed to equip staff with knowledge of the AfCFTA framework and NILDS’ implementation role. Ladan emphasized the importance of providing technical and legislative support while raising awareness of the AfCFTA framework to ensure effective coordination within Nigeria and across African states.
The Representative of the Nigeria Coordinating Office of AfCFTA, Dr Fatima Bello, commended NILDS for its efforts to ensure successful AfCFTA implementation in Nigeria, highlighting the significance of staff awareness of the legal framework. Dr Adejoke Akasanmi, Director of Training at NILDS, encouraged participants to engage with dedication, deepening their understanding of the AfCFTA legal framework and their contributions to policy implementation.
