Post: Oilserv Initiates Pipeline Re-Routing for NLNG Gas Transmission Expansion

Abuja: Oilserv Limited has commenced work on the shallow-water section of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Gas Transmission System (GTS-1) expansion project aimed at strengthening supply infrastructure to Bonny Island liquefaction plant. The Managing Director, Oilserv Limited, Dr. Kenechukwu Nwangwu, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the just concluded Nigeria Oil and Gas (NOG) Conference.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Nwangwu stated that the GTS re-routing project is part of NLNG’s strategy to safeguard and enhance its gas transmission network. The project involves installing a shallow-water pipeline to Bonny Island, aiming to strengthen and secure gas supply to NLNG’s processing facilities. Nwangwu highlighted the engineering complexity introduced by the project, which involves specialised marine construction activities.

The company is currently laying about six kilometers of offshore pipeline across shallow waters using barges and other specialised installation equipment. Thousands of pipeline joints have already been transported from Port Harcourt to Bonny Island, where installation activities are ongoing. Nwangwu emphasized the precision required in logistics, welding, installation, testing, and tie-ins with the broader gas transmission network.

Oilserv is also advancing work on several strategic gas infrastructure projects, including the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline. This project is part of Nigeria’s efforts to deepen domestic gas utilization. The AKK Gas Pipeline Project remains one of the country’s most ambitious gas infrastructure developments. Oilserv has completed the mainline welding activities and is now focused on pre-commissioning and commissioning operations, working collaboratively with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) and other stakeholders.

Nwangwu described the AKK Pipeline as a key initiative under Nigeria’s Decade of Gas, which will improve domestic gas transportation, support power generation, boost manufacturing, and stimulate industrial development across northern Nigeria. Oilserv is also executing the Ubeta Project for TotalEnergies and progressing with the ANOH Renaissance Project and the ANOH-NNPC project.

Oilserv has leveraged technology to improve project delivery, being among the first indigenous companies to deploy automatic and semi-automatic welding systems in large-scale pipeline construction. The company is integrating digital engineering tools and Artificial Intelligence (AI) into engineering design, project analytics, and document management to enhance efficiency, safety, and decision-making.

On domestic gas utilization, Nwangwu noted that infrastructure remains the biggest challenge rather than gas availability. Pipelines, processing facilities, and distribution networks are essential to ensure supplies reach industries, power plants, and households. Every pipeline installed expands Nigeria’s capacity to move gas efficiently from producing fields to processing plants and industrial users. He commended NLNG’s increasing supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to the domestic market, describing it as a positive step towards improving cooking gas availability.
