Post: Rainy Season: AEDC Urges Customers to Observe Electrical Safety

Abuja: The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has advised customers to take precautions during the rainy season to prevent electrical accidents, electrocution, and property damage caused by flooding. The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of AEDC, Mr. Chijioke Okwuokenye, shared these recommendations in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Okwuokenye urged residents to maintain a safe distance from fallen or damaged electrical wires and to promptly report any damaged poles, exposed conductors, or sparking electrical equipment to AEDC for immediate action. He emphasized the importance of keeping children away from electrical installations and flood-prone areas, and advised against handling electrical appliances with wet hands.

Okwuokenye further recommended that households should switch off their main electrical supply if floodwaters threaten their premises. He also highlighted the importance of engaging only qualified and competent electricians for electrical repairs and cautioned customers against attempting to reconnect damaged electrical installations themselves.

He stressed that prompt reporting of electrical hazards can help prevent accidents, save lives, and ensure a faster response to emergencies. On post-flood safety, Okwuokenye advised customers not to restore electricity until all floodwaters have completely receded. He recommended that a qualified electrician should first inspect the internal wiring and electrical installation before power is restored.

Okwuokenye also encouraged residents to replace any damaged wiring, sockets, switches, distribution boards, and protective devices. He advised that damaged electricity meters or other AEDC equipment should be reported immediately for inspection and replacement if necessary. He insisted that flooded electrical equipment should not be energized until it has been thoroughly inspected and certified safe by qualified personnel.

By adhering to these safety measures, Okwuokenye stated, the risk of electrocution, fire outbreaks, and damage to electrical appliances during the rainy season would be significantly reduced.
