Post: SC Orders Submission of Squatters’ Settlement Demolition Details

Kathmandu: The Supreme Court (SC) has issued an order to the federal government to provide detailed documentation of the procedures followed in the demolition of squatters’ settlements. A single bench of Justice Sunil Kumar Pokharel mandated the government to submit these details across five specific points.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the SC is seeking information on the mandatory procedures and processes required under the Constitution of Nepal, the Right to Housing Act, 2075 BS, and the directives outlined in point no. 91 of the government’s 100-point governance reform. This reform was implemented following a decision by the Council of Ministers.

Additionally, the SC has requested specific details concerning the rehabilitation, food supply, and healthcare for senior citizens, patients, and physically challenged individuals. It also seeks information on alternative provisions for children’s education and the basic human rights status of those displaced by the demolition.

The petition, filed by Mazid Ansari and others against the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, has prompted the SC to call both parties to appear for discussions on May 6. The SC has also ordered the Office of the Attorney General to provide a written response detailing the bases and reasons for the demolition within 15 days.
