Abuja: Legislative legacy is not measured by the number of motions, bills sponsored, or oversight visits but by the courage displayed in addressing controversial and nationally important issues. Former senator representing Kaduna Central, Sen. Shehu Sani, made this known on Tuesday in Abuja during the 2026 National Assembly Open Week, themed ‘Three Years of the 10th Assembly: Advancing Transparency, Inclusion and Reform.’
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Sani addressed the leadership of the National Assembly, challenging them to recognise the lasting impact of their decisions. He emphasized the historic roles of the President and Speaker, urging them to stand up for what is right and just, leaving a mark in Nigeria’s democratic history through courageous and principled leadership.
Sani highlighted the challenges leaders face due to political considerations, which often hinder them from speaking the truth or taking bold decisions. However, he stressed that truth and justice must remain the guiding principles of governance. He reminded participants of the sacrifices made by citizens in Nigeria’s struggle for democracy, urging lawmakers to protect and strengthen democratic ideals.
The former lawmaker also acknowledged the enormous expectations placed on public office holders and the challenges of leadership, noting that governance is often complicated by limited resources and competing demands. Nonetheless, he encouraged the leadership of the National Assembly to remain focused and make meaningful contributions despite the pressures they face.
In his concluding remarks, Sani urged leaders to find their place and make their impact, even amidst turbulence, reinforcing the importance of courage and integrity in their legislative roles.
