Lagos: The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Chapel is preparing to address challenges affecting Nigeria’s economy, politics, and the oil and gas sector. Mrs Vivian Ihechu, the Chairman of the 2026 NUJ-NAN Lagos Press Week Committee, highlighted the need to scrutinize political influences on investment, policy stability, energy security, and economic growth within the sector.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the symposium, titled the 2026 Annual Strategic Public Lecture/Symposium, will take place on September 23 at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Complex in Surulere, Lagos. The theme for the event is ‘2027 and Nigeria’s Future: Impact of Politics on Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Industry and Economy – The Role of the Media.’
Ihechu emphasized the crucial role of the media in ensuring accurate and balanced coverage to inform public discourse, especially in the run-up to the 2027 elections. She expressed hope that the symposium would enhance journalists’ understanding of the sector, promoting informed and fact-based reporting during the election period.
Mr Adeyemi Adeleye, Secretary of the Press Week Committee, noted that the symposium would serve as a platform for stakeholders to discuss practical solutions to the sector’s challenges. The event aims to foster constructive engagement among political, economic, and energy stakeholders.
Dr Kola Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Group Ltd., will chair the symposium, bringing his extensive experience in the energy sector. The Special Guest, Dr Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, will discuss plans for expanding electricity access and alternative power solutions in rural areas.
Industry experts such as Mr Ademola Henry Adigun, former Team Leader of the FOSTER initiative, and Dr Joseph Nwakwue, CEO of Zera Advisory and Consulting, are expected to provide insights into policy, technical operations, and regulatory issues affecting the industry. Mr Edu Inyang, National President of the Nigerian Association of LPG Marketers, will address issues related to domestic gas development and cleaner energy access.
Dr Ayodele Oni from Bloomfield Law Practice will offer legal perspectives, while Dr Akinrolabu Ayoola, a lecturer and political leader, will discuss the political dimension. The financial sector will be represented by Dr Ken Opara of Fidelity Bank Plc, with Mr Oliver Alawuba, Chairman of the Body of Banks’ Chief Executive Officers, discussing the link between political stability and investment.
Security concerns will be explored by Mr Fatai Tijani, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, focusing on how security impacts business confidence and economic activities. Media responsibilities will be prominently featured, with a panel of editors and publishers from various media organizations, including Mr Sopuruchi Onwuka, Mr Adewale Sanyaolu, Mr Emeka Ugwuanyi, Mr Sola Bello, and Mr Victor Oriola.
The panel will examine the media’s role in promoting transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. Adeleye encouraged stakeholders, particularly media practitioners, to use the platform to promote constructive dialogue on energy security and economic development. The symposium is expected to attract a diverse audience, including journalists, energy professionals, policymakers, business leaders, political figures, and members of the diplomatic corps.
