Keffi: The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a significant expansion of the country’s grid wheeling capacity, now exceeding 8,700 MegaWatts (MW) over the past year. This development was revealed by Mr. Oluwagbenga Ajiboye, TCN’s Executive Director of Transmission Service Provider (TSP), during a three-day capacity workshop for Power Correspondents held in Keffi, Nasarawa State.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ajiboye emphasized that this enhanced capacity would depend on the readiness of the Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to pick up the load. TCN has been systematically rehabilitating aging assets and expanding the transmission network through internal funding and over $1.4 billion in multilateral development financing.
Ajiboye highlighted a significant component of this infrastructure development, which involved deploying over 89 power transformers nationwide, including in cities such as Lagos, Abuja, Benin, Kano, Jos, Gombe, Oshogbo, Asaba, and other locations. These additions have contributed over 8,500 Mega Volt Amperes (MVA) of new capacity to the transmission network, thereby enhancing the delivery of bulk power to DisCos across Nigeria.
Furthermore, Ajiboye noted that TCN is addressing critical load constraints with the addition of 300 MVA transformer units at strategic locations like Katampe, Lekki, Ikeja West, and Akangba. This targeted expansion is aimed at improving operational resilience and enhancing peak power delivery to homes and businesses throughout the country.
Preventive maintenance has been carried out on more than two-thirds of TCN’s locations nationwide, according to Ajiboye. The company pledges continued collaboration with the Office of the National Security Advisor (ONSA), security agencies, and community vigilante structures to safeguard critical power infrastructure.
Ajiboye also commended the media for its ongoing role in shaping public understanding of the power sector. He stressed that transparent engagement with energy-reporting media is crucial for building public trust and ensuring accurate communication of technical realities.
Earlier, Mr. Eric Ene, Assistant General Manager, Public Affairs at TCN, explained that the workshop serves as a strategic platform for TCN’s executives and technical experts to provide in-depth insights into grid expansion efforts, preventive maintenance, system stability initiatives, and the broader roadmap for the nation’s power transmission infrastructure.
