Sokoto: The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Sokoto State Chapter, has applauded Governor Ahmed Aliyu for implementing a N70,000 minimum wage for primary and secondary school teachers in the state. State NUT Chairman, Comrade Murtala Muhammad, made the commendation in Sokoto as part of the activities marking World Teachers Day.
According to Voice of Nigeria, Muhammad expressed gratitude to the Governor for the transformation witnessed in the education sector under his administration. He praised Aliyu as a “teacher-friendly” governor due to his dedication and revolutionary approach to transforming the teaching profession in Sokoto State. Teachers remain grateful to him for his unprecedented approval of the N70,000 minimum wage for workers, even as he highlighted some challenges that need the government’s quick intervention.
Muhammad described teachers as strategic national security assets and key drivers in the formation of civic responsibility. He concluded that there must be a commitment to adding value to teachers and empowering them for effective service delivery. “The future is entirely dependent on collective action by all relevant stakeholders to elevate and empower the teaching force,” he said.
Comrade Muhammad reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to supporting government efforts in achieving quality education in the state. He stated that the theme of this year’s event signifies that teachers are not merely transmitters of knowledge but architects of the collective future. Therefore, the welfare, dignity, and professional status of teachers must remain a top priority for all stakeholders.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu was also presented with an award of excellence for service delivery and commitment to the teaching profession. The 2025 World Teachers Day celebration has as its theme: ‘Together for teachers, together for tomorrow’.
