Abuja: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), supported by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has set May 25 as the date for its Presidential primary election in preparation for the 2027 General Elections.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the party announced this timetable in a communique following the 106th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. The announcement was made by the National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jungudo Mohammed, in Abuja. The NEC also outlined other key dates, including April 10 for submitting the membership register, May 2 for State Assembly primaries, May 9 for National Assembly primaries, and May 16 for gubernatorial primaries.
The timetable aligns with the revised schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections as issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in accordance with the Electoral Act, 2022. The NEC highlighted the necessity of adhering to the INEC timetable and underscored the importance of resolving disputes arising from the primaries within the specified timelines.
The NEC called on all party organs and stakeholders to begin preparations and adhere strictly to the approved timetable and statutory provisions. Commending the efforts of the National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, the NEC expressed satisfaction with the successful conduct of the Ward and Local Government Congresses, while State Congresses were scheduled for the upcoming weekend.
The NEC expressed confidence in the peaceful and transparent conduct of the congresses, in line with the party’s constitution and guidelines. It approved the conduct of Zonal Congresses in two weeks as part of the party’s progression toward the National Convention, urging unity and discipline among members and leaders.
The communique welcomed the Court of Appeal judgments affirming the NCWC’s leadership, emphasizing the importance of reconciliation and collective responsibility. It urged parties in disputes to embrace reconciliation and avoid escalating matters to the Supreme Court, focusing on the party’s unity and future.
The NEC approved the expansion of electronic membership registration to strengthen grassroots participation and transparency. It reaffirmed preparations for the National Convention on March 29 and 30, where a new National Working Committee will be elected.
The PDP reiterated its commitment to democratic principles, national unity, and good governance, positioning itself as a credible platform for leadership and national development. The NEC expressed optimism for renewed unity and determination among party members to enhance the party’s national service.
