Post: Zone 5 AIG Warns Officers Against Human Rights Abuse, Extortion

Benin: The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 5, Salman-Dogo, has issued a warning to police officers in the zone about human rights violations, extortion, and unlawful detention. He emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct within the force during a seminar and interactive session on ‘Human Rights Violations and other Allied Infractions’.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, this event was held in Benin and was organized by the Nigeria Police Force Zone 5 Headquarters in conjunction with the Police Service Commission (PSC). Salman-Dogo highlighted that respect for human rights is a fundamental principle of modern policing, essential for rebuilding public trust in law enforcement. He reminded officers of the consequences of human rights abuses, unprofessional conduct, and unlawful detention, as well as extortion and harassment, all of which could harm the force’s reputation.

Salman-Dogo reiterated that under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, the Nigeria police remain committed to lawful and accountable policing. He urged officers to be civil, disciplined, and people-oriented in their duties. Officers found guilty of abuse of office or misconduct would face disciplinary actions according to existing laws and regulations. He also encouraged the public to support the police with credible information and constructive partnerships to enhance security and public safety.

Mr. Olayinka Balogun, a consultant to the PSC on community policing and human rights, delivered lectures on various topics, including ‘Ethical Policing’, ‘Citizens’ Rights’, ‘Disciplinary Procedures’, and ‘Accountability’. Balogun, a retired Commissioner of Police, advised officers against interference in civil matters and stressed the importance of professionalism in handling public complaints.

The session also included discussions on police-community relations, justice, fairness, and the rule of law, with participants sharing practical experiences and addressing policing challenges. Dignitaries at the event included the Edo Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, and senior officers from the zonal and state commands.
