Abuja: Savannah Centre for Diplomacy Democracy and Development (SCDDD) has called upon former President Olusegun Obasanjo to counsel Nigerians and politicians on maintaining peace before, during, and after the 2027 general elections.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Chairman of SCDDD Council of the Wise, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola (rtd.), emphasized this request in a statement released by Amb. Sani Salauwa-Bala, Executive Director and Secretary of the centre. Ariwoola highlighted the importance of Obasanjo’s continued involvement in strengthening democracy and governance in Nigeria, expressing satisfaction with the recent peaceful elections in Osun State.
Justice Ariwoola recalled past electoral challenges, including violence, fraud, and disruptions, stressing the need for peaceful elections in 2027. He recounted previous electoral issues marked by thuggery, rigging, and hate speech, which in some cases led to fatalities, as seen in 2011. Recognizing Obasanjo’s significant contributions to the nation since 1979 and his presidency from 1999-2007, Ariwoola lauded him as a Peace-Loving Global Citizen. He urged Obasanjo to continue guiding Nigerians, especially politicians, to ensure the 2027 elections are free from violence and focus on deepening democracy and governance.
Ariwoola also encouraged Nigerians to participate actively in the elections to counter negative predictions and build on democratic achievements. He stressed the importance of avoiding hate speech and falsehoods, urging campaigns to address issues affecting Nigerians’ daily lives.
